I always thought Lady Liberty was the Statue of Liberty, I was wrong.

Well, you're kinda wrong. Libertas, the Roman goddess is probably the roots of Lady Liberty. LL was popular in the late 18th century in France as well. That being said, the Statue of Liberty is based on Libertas/Lady Liberty, as I understand it.
