That's the first Lum article I've ever read. Well, read most of anyway. And it has confirmed my assumption.
I don't give a shit what Lum has to say. He's an idiot.
I had heard second hand about alot of his theories about things and they were just crazy to me. I remember when him and his wife were trying to convince people that PKing in UO was as bad a rape in real life. How the hell do you equate the two?

I'll admit it.
I REALLY miss the early days of UO.
Best designed MMO ever.
I think playing EVE has really helped me appreciate UO that much more.

In fact, I think it’s pretty cool that someone who writes for a newspaper as esteemed as the New York Times shares a common interest with us as World of Warcraft players.
NY Times? Esteemed? There goes someone's credibility...

That conversation played out on Lum's very famous (within the community) forums, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't Lum himself saying it.That's the first Lum article I've ever read. Well, read most of anyway. And it has confirmed my assumption.

In fact, I think I know who first introduced the concept, but I don't like naming names.

Uh, did people then call her crazy?I thought it was Lum's wife. When challenged with the fact that people knew women who had been raped and they assure you they aren't the same. Lum's wife's reply was such that she had been raped too, and could say that it WAS the same.
It's not me, it's someone else.
So... what made it so good again?
It's not a matter of what made it good again, so much as remembering how UO was so much deeper and more accessible than the other games out now.
Look at a lot of the MMO games that have been made since UO and you'll find pretty graphics and not much depth.
UO had everything any current MMO offers, only it did it better AND even had more.
The UO world was one of true freedom. It didn't have the limited freedoms that the other MMOs have. It does now, but in the beginning it didn't and the world was real and immersive because of it.
