Want to beta test this game?

It only costs $150!

Sure, there's a standard beta for $75, but if you go that route you don't get a full copy of the game when it goes gold.

WTF? $75 for a copy of a game? $75 just to beta test it?

Read the article and realize they claim to have 10,000+ new people playing...

That's how it works now for all but the bit AAA titles. If you are eager enough you can pay extra to get in early. If you aren't just wait. Makes sense to me. Why the WTF-ery?

I own a lot of early access games, Rust being a prime example.

I'm not shocked at all by them asking folks to pay to play the Beta. I equate this business model to Kickstarter without Kickstarter.

What I'm shocked about is the $75 price tag just to beta test, and then $75 more if you want a copy of the game when it comes out.

What PC game costs $75? Hell, what console game costs $75?

I loved the original game. Loved it. Loved it, loved it. Doubt that feeling can be captured again.

Ah, if $75 is going to be their actual game release price point, then they have made a mistake and I agree with your WTF-ing.

But if it's only for the early purchasers, then that makes sense. Kickstarter reward prices are always higher than the final end cost to more patient buyers. It's the cost of being a true believer or something.

I, too, recall the original Elite very fondly. 10,000+ is no surprise at all. But I myself don't remember it quite $75 fondly.

On the other hand, it was $325 for alpha access... so this is like a 50% discount!

I have no recollection of Elite at all.

Oh, I do. I had the C64 version. This brings it all back.

I need to dig up a video of docking...

EDIT: Ah, here we go.

I wouldn't have known the game without the second video. That rotating space station clicked. I played this too. But, all I ever did was try to land. Leave the station, turn around, try to land. I do remember flying to other stations a couple of times, but, I could never land.

Eventually, you could earn enough $ to buy an auto-lander. But, I was pretty damned good at landing, so it wasn't an issue.

I didn't have the manual, of course, so I had no idea at first how to dock. I got really good at piloting into the docking slot ... and blowing up myself and the station because I hadn't known I needed to press "D" ... or was it "C"? Whatever.

You had to press something? I just thought I sucked! No manual either.

Yeah, there was something about requesting docking clearance or some such. Took me ages to stumble on that one.

So much Blue Danube.

I had the manual, guess that explains it. But it still wasn't 100%.
