Anyone know of any charts that compare the speeds of laptop CPUs to desktop CPUs? I'm looking at Pentium M processors (750 range) and want to know how they compare to Desktop speeds, or the Pentium 4 CPUs they are putting in laptops. Is a high end Pentium M as fast as the high end desktops? The Pentium M is rated at 1.8GHz. How much slower is that than the 3GHz desktops? Stuff like that.

Only thing I know about laptop cpu's is that they have some sort of half-speed mode that manufacturers always quote to make it sound like the laptop battery lasts longer than it actually does.

No, but a 1.8Ghz M will run as fast as a 4 in general... a bit slower in multimedia stuff (Photoshop, etc) but faster in everything else.

The largest advantage is battery life/power consumption. P4's have 90-120 watt heat envelopes, PM have around 30watts.

The biggest issue with laptop performance in the har-drive... If you can find SATA in a laptop, you'll be very happy.

So, a 1.8 M will be as fast as a 1.8 Desktop? Or will it run like a 3.8 or something?

Dammit, I meant to say a 1.8 would be like a 3.0 P4...

Basically, Multiply the PM Ghz by 1 2/3, to get P4 equivalent.

Wacky crazy. . . What about Centrino? Is that just another name for the M?

Thanks for the info, by the way.
