I've got a good friend who is a Three Kingdoms fanatic. He's gonna mess his drawers over this.

One of the more interesting periods of warfare in the ancient world. Always fun to hear about people kersplatting each other over 2000 years ago, complete w\ crossbows & gunpowder.

On the other hand, I get worried about John Woo's films when they stray from noir.

Yay! Netflix.

It was pretty good. A lot of various characters so I almost need to watch it over again since by the end of the 2.5 hour movie I had a good grip on who was who, unlike at the beginning.

Second "3 Kingdoms" era movie I've watched lately, and while there was some overlap, the focus was two different battles.

Hard to say which was better. I enjoyed the large-scale battles in this flick better than in the other, but I think the other had a little more individual kung fu fighting.

I am also getting the sense that these guys would kick the Romans'-of-this-era asses. Explodey stuff, massive warships, repeating crossbows. Watching the battles, tech, and tactics I got to the point where I wondered if these guys could have beaten 1865 Robert E. Lee with comparably sized armies.

Had Alexander the Great not died, he probably would've pushed through India and rubbed up against the Chinese. That would've been interesting as hell. I'm also willing to bet the Chinese would've destroyed their Roman contemporaries if they both expanded out far enough. They simply had better toys. I'd give them even odds against an army not packing long-range guns with rifling.
