Of the three seasons of Dexter I've seen, this was my least favorite. This is still one of the best shows on TV, it's just that Season 3 had a tough act to follow in Seasons 1 and 2. It didn't help that I feel the writers fell into the typical TV show writing trap of advancing character stories too quickly.

There will be some minor spoilers here...

In this season, Jimmy Smits joins the cast as an Assistant DA, Miguel Prado, whose youngest brother has been murdered in a drug dealer's house. His older brother, Ramone, is a sheriff who is hell bent on revenge. Dexter works the crime scene, which leads to Miguel befriending Dexter. The season progresses from there with the focus being on who killed the ADA's brother, and the manhunt for the drug dealer.

Of course, that entire paragraph is pretty misleading as I've left out major plot details, and at least one statement while true, is false... But I don't want to spoil the season for anyone.

As you might guess, Jimmy Smits' relationship with Dexter is the driving force behind the whole season.

Aside from that are the various subplots involving Dexter's co-workers like Deb's new partner, new lover, etc. The most interesting subplots, however, all seem to be more for Season 4 than for Season 3. Two things occur with Dexter's own personal life that are major, yet are "preliminary" here in Season 3. One subplot with Deb is one of those things that is really downplayed here, but you know they're setting up the series finale with it.

Overall, Dexter is "must see television". It's well acted, funny, and smart. Seasons 1 and 2 were outstanding, with Season 3 being more of a "time out" for character development.

Season 5 should include ghost ********, like ghost Dad.

He just pops in random scenes and goes "******** *********", scares everyone and pops back out.

Silly? Maybe. Awesome? Definitely.

I edited Troy's post because it contained a HUGE spoiler without warning.

However, I do agree that it would be awesome.

I'll be interested to hear what you think of Season 4.

You'll have to wait until the DVD comes out, which if the last two seasons are a good indicator, won't be until August.

I will say that I read the wikipedia entries for the books, and I can honestly say if they go that route, I believe it will be complete ass.

And the fact that Dexter's Season 4 finale was a highlight on The Soup (I made my wife watch it and let me know when it's safe to come back into the room) doesn't inspire me with confidence, although Joel McHale did praise the show. I don't know why they showed it or what the joke was, but I know it was the longest Soup segment ever.

If you don't know, the books are very supernaturally themed. Essentially, Dexter isn't a serial killer, he's possessed. And then there's Cody and Aster...

I'm waiting to see if that gets your curiosity or if you already know because the show is heading in that direction.

I think it's not too much of a spoiler to say that the show is, apparently, still nothing like the books.

Supernatural? Really? I think it's better without that.

Fuck the soup, I stopped watching the show and was gonna wait to watch it later in the year.

Accidentally watched the soup for 30 seconds and it ruined the ending for me.

Yeah, in the books Dexter is possessed and without the demon or whatever he doesn't even have serial killer tendencies.

Also, he's training Cody and Aster in the code of Harry when he realizes they're going to be serial killers.

Complete garbage. Yeah, humans can't just be evil, they have to be possessed...

Glad they dumped that shit for reality in the TV show. (Well, a more plausible reality.)

Has this guy ever been in a show where he didn't converse with his dead father? Seriously.

Anyway, I sort of saw where the show was going about 3 episodes into the season, but I still enjoyed watching it unfold. Not as tense as season 2, but that's ok, too. I don't need to be given hypertension in order to enjoy a show.

This was the season with Jimmy Smits, if you don't remember.

Other Dexter Season 3 thread.

Ranking the seasons, I'd go 2, 1, then 3 & 4 would be a tie.

I've heard good things about 5. Looking forward to watching it this summer.

Goddammit. I did a search and thought it was odd that there was no season 3 thread.
