1. I mentioned Toy Story 3 should be a contender for best picture. It got the nomination.

2. How in the hell has Nolan not been nominated for best director for Inception?

How in the hell has Nolan not been nominated for best director for Inception?

Because his directing wasn't that great.

The beginning of the movie is chaotic with no explanation, and Nolan very slowly unravels his tale while interspersing action sequences without making them feel obligatory. He also edits between multiple layers cleanly. He tells a complex story without overt exposition. He gets great performances from a number of actors, and pushes the visual barrier as well.

In the age of CGI and mammoth budgets, finding a way to show people something on film they've never seen is becoming harder and harder.

I'll dispute that. When he sets it up with, "Alright, we can fuck with physics however we want and all the mental ghosts get increasingly hostile the more you stick around ..." then it starts feeling obligatory. His entire take on the protagonist's thing with his former wife or whatever also got on my damn nerves. It didn't feel like a story I've never seen before or even mechanics I hadn't seen before. He just put a bit more polish on them that most folk do.

And I say again, the missed opportunities in Dreamland pissed me off more than anything. You could make an excuse for ANYTHING, almost no matter how outlandish. Scripting dreams that resemble reality too much make me feel like Star Trek aliens that are all come from the same factory, just with different forehead ridge options bolted on in the makeup department.
