A foreign flick set in Finland where undead German soldiers are looking for some gold they stole at the end of WWII. I have no idea why they're looking for gold they already stole, but that's the story.

Oh, and they're drawn to it, ala the pirates in The Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl.

This movie had to be an indy, due to the hot girls and fat guys in the film. Plus, they go way overboard with the blood, and the homages to Evil Dead 1 & 2.

I can't really recommend it to anyone despite not completely hating it. But the best thing I can say about it is that it's better than most SyFy movies. Oh, and it has subtitles.

3 out of 10.

Synopsis:
Nazi zombies kill annoying Norwegians.

Review:
A very self-aware movie, this isn't straight horror by any means. It's got an Evil Dead feel to it. Not any of the movies, though. It's got the tone of the TV show, Ash vs. Evil Dead. First off, these zombies are not the slow, shambly Romero kind. They move like Boyle types but retain a lot of their mental functionality. They wear WWII-era protection, including (critically) helmets, they can be stealthy, they understand use of basic guerilla warfare tactics, etc. Point being: think of them as immortal, wrinkly cannibals more than zombies.

Anyhow, a group of hippie and hipster Norwegians arrives at an isolated mountain cabin on holiday. Their very first night there, an old dude shows up out of nowhere and asks for a drink. He tells them about the Germans that occupied the area during the war and the various atrocities they committed. The straw that broke the camel's back for the local populace was SS Colonel Herzog organizing a systemic looting of the town. The villagers ambushed the Nazis and left them buried in the icy snow. At this, he leaves. The dumb-ass cabin dwellers react to this news by getting drunker, and in the middle of grabbing more beer from the storage compartment below the floor, they find a fucking box full of gold trinkets and jewelry. Conveniently, they can't just leave. Turns out they're one hippie short, and she's a couple days overdue. One of their party has taken the only snowmobile to search the trails for her because she was skiing to the cabin. That's a problem because that dude's the only one who remembers the directions to hike back to their car. Predictably, Herzog and his troops show up and shit gets real.

Considering the dreck I've pulled off Netflix the past couple weeks, this above average flick seemed far better than should have been. There aren't a lot of two-word phrases that sell me on a film, but "nazi zombie" is on the list. Maybe I keep hoping Wolfenstein: the Movie will come out. The cabin goers spend the first 75% of the flick as Berkeley douchebags with the survivors all morphing into semi-bad-asses by the last quarter of the action.

Verdict:
Worth seeing. Will review sequel later.

This might be one of the original movies still in my Netflix queue. 7 years, or so.
