Abrams talks a bit about it.

http://www.mania.com/abrams-talks-star-trek-2_article_117646.html

"We’ve literally had two meetings now. We haven’t decided anything but we’re starting to circle around some ideas. We got a lot of fan response from the first one and a considerable amount of critical response and one of the things we heard was, ‘Make sure the next one deals with modern-day issues.’ We’re trying to keep it as up-to-date and as reflective of what’s going on today as possible. So that’s one thing, to make it reflect the things that we are all dealing with today.

I wish they would ignore "fan" advice and just be clever and make good movies.

Star Trek did deal with current issues, but it did it in a relatively timeless way. I don't know that Abrams can pull that off.

I am just afraid it will be heavy handed.

I still say he's a fucking hack.

Sorry, I should have said "Original Star Trek blahblahblah..." I didn't mean the recent movie. Becuase yeah, he's a bit of a hack, and couldn't pull off anything subtle at all.

I liked the movie, but it was in no way deep or meaningful, and I don't think he should try.

I'm just worried that if they try to inject current, real world issues into it as seen through the eyes of Hollywood, the main villain will be a warlord named Hsub who is conquering peaceful civilizations for their natural resources.

No, we'll get Kirk's love interest dying of some curable disease because she doesn't have health insurance, and some black messiah giving them technology to heal everyone.

While riding a unicorn.

A space unicorn.

Oh snap. I seem to be sharing a common vision reminiscent of the people from the movie Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

This is important.

This means something.
