I understand they aired 7 or 8 episodes, then had a hiatus... when did/does the hiatus end? I'm torrenting all of the season 4 episodes up to now and I don't know where to stop.

Season 4 is this season right?
If so, episode 8 is the final one right before the little break. Episode 8 was the one that just aired on Thursday, April 24th.

But I just set my DVR to hit new episodes, and it is recording one this coming Thursday...

He meant to say that Episode 9 was the one that just aired this week. Next week is the second new one, episode 10. Sounds like you need to snag one more before next Thursday.
For this sort of thing I recommend checking wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Lost_episodes

For the first time ever, I'm all caught up.
Damn, they shot Alex in the head. I guess the producers got tired of trying to decide whether her eyes were blue or brown.
Damn, the smoke monster(s) didn't kill the mercs.
Damn, I hope someday they re-release season 4 in a DVD set that's all in chronological order, because this back and forth shit through 3 or 4 different timelines is getting confusing.

HUGE SPOILERS TO FOLLOW, SO IF YOU HAVEN'T WATCH THE FINALE YET, DON'T READ ON...
I told my wife when we first saw the coffin way back when it first appeared that it was Locke. It just made sense.
That being said, I don't know how they'll explain it, but I don't think he's dead.

Oh, he's dead. But if they get him back to the island, he won't be dead anymore.
This show is crazy. I like it, but it's still crazy.

Jack'll just spin the Wheel of Pain/Woe (What was it in Conan?) and Locke will jump up and help him spin it. Or they'll do the whole Christian Shepard thing. That guy gets around.
And what kind of crazy shit went on where they'll killed their long awaited messiah. On second thought, scratch that. I''m going to go read some history.
The really f'ed up part will not be Locke coming back to life or explaining how Jack's dead dad can globe trot and teleport, it'll be the crew getting back to the island. It's not going to be a plane now. It'll be Jack's booze and pills.
Sorry, I just read over this and I think I've sprung a leak in my brain pan. I'm posting it anyways as a future sobriety test. :p

Here's the tricky part...
Producers have said the following:
"Locke, Jin, and Sawyer are alive on the island."
"Christian Shepard is dead."
In fact, Locke has been shown alive on the island in the future. Also a fact is that Jack didn't bother to check Locke's pulse...I mean, just because a guy's in a coffin doesn't mean he's actually dead.
I am completely clueless as to what's going on. Remember, they said the show will be completely based on science, not magic.

I just hope they don't pull a 'Dallas' and say it was a dream. I see what you're saying about the science.
One possibility - there's a whole temporal distortion thing going on with the island. They might play that card, like Star Trek.
Another possibility - Locke's death would be a good catalyst to get things going. Maybe he faked his own death like his dad did.
So the next question is - If Christian Shepard is dead, who's talking to Locke, Hugo, and scaring the shit out of Jack. Are the dead people other people see echoes? I don't by the 'mass halucination' bit.
And what's the deal with Walt. Is he Locke's replacement? The Others treated him like he was something special.
And why doesn't Richard age? I think he and the original Others are from the pirate ship.
And when are they going to explain the smoke monster?

I heard that next year will involve a lot of time travel.

Like commonly known and well proven science? Or theoretical, grey area, "eh, maybe" science?

Good question, only they didn't specify.
Although, I thought the comment was pretty specific about everything having a scientific explanation.
So take that however you want.

Well, to put it another way.
Strictly speaking, one can be scientific by following a set of rules. Usually physics gets to make them, but if you're a writer and never break your own tenets, you can technically say you're scientific.
Don't be shocked if such an explanation is used to weasel his way around the word "science."

I'm sure they meant science fiction, which if they're doing it right involves using science as we know it, postulating a few new things that aren't true but are reasonable with their internal logic, and going from there.
If they aren't doing it right it's Star Trek.

I'm sure I never missed an episode, but I still don't know what that's from.
