This is a story written by a Rolling Stone reporter who was embedded in a Marine unit during the 2nd Iraq war.

One episode in to the seven-part series so far... and the guy pretty much nailed Marine life. "Nailed" as in accuracy.

The only part that really made me question the reality of it was the overt racism.... I saw guys lose stripes in real life for saying less offensive things than the guys on TV were saying.... but I had the definite impression that a lot of this show was "Marine Life from Concentrate." I reckon that has to be done in order to condense an entire tour of experiences down to 75 minutes, and still maintain the vibe.

This show had it all... good Marines, and bad. Good officers, and bad. Stuff I've seen myself, in person. This show was so spot on that not only did it make me remember the good things about the military... it also made remember the stupid shit.... for a strong example, the Sergeant Major running around like an idiot getting on people for dress code violations. Yes, there's a point.... but yes, he's still an asshole. That sort of thing.

I also liked how when it was time for the killing to begin, the Marines were portrayed as the locked and cocked bad asses that they are in real life.

I also liked how they stopped and laughed at the reporter when they were under possible gas attack and he couldn't get his gear on.

This show gets a thumbs-up from me, so far.

Ooh rah.

But ask me about wearing girls stockings, sometime.

It's an extra layer of fabric between the skin of your feet and your green socks, to reduce friction, to keep the flesh on the bottom of your feet from sloughing off after a 25 mile forced march.

These socks, are they made of steel wool, or what?

Well, wool.

You would be surprised how much a difference that makes over 25 miles. An extra misplaced ounce is magnified to an excruciating level over that amount of time and distance. Most of the time I would wear the stoking THEN a pair of black dress socks THEN the green wool socks.... to reduce friction.

It's really gross to see a guy pull off his boot and it is full of blood.

The second episode was quite good, as well.

Reading the book now. Pretty good for a book written by a liberal pussy reporter.

Know why they stopped embedding reporters in combat units?

Because they were writing articles favorable to troops.

A grooming-regulations-nazi.

Marine Corps grooming standards for mustaches makes you look like Hitler... really, context is funny.

I hope the BD of that series doesn't cost more than $60, but knowing HBO, I'm guessing $100+ on amazon.
