One of the "8 Movies to Die For" series from Horrorfest. (Not sure which year, I'm guessing this is the new batch.)

This is an indy, so I'll cut it a bit more slack.

This might have hit me in the right mood, but I really liked this film.

The story goes that an archaeologist unearths a monster that is somehow linked to the disappearance of an Indian tribe.

I was expecting this one to suck, but was amazed that it not only had decent writing and performances, but very good special effects, including the monster itself.

Huge props for the GREATEST RAG DOLL PHYSICS IN HOLLYWOOD HISTORY. (The explosion is around 33 minutes in and the ensuing laughter should be worth the price of admission alone.)

Outside of that hilarity, the movie was actually on par with and actually better than most big studio horror releases.

One of the lead actresses, the sheriff, had a whole Roy Schneider in Jaws vibe going while looking more like Michelle Rodriguez without the shitty attitude and over the top acting. Kind of funny considering there is an actual "Lost" cast member in this film, the guy who plays Tom. In another role is none other than Charlie Murphy, who has lost a lot of weight. Everyone else is a lesser known person, but nobody turns in a shitty performance.

The writing is solid throughout with only the finale being kind of stupid as you could tell they were going for the gore factor rather than what a smart person would've done.

I really enjoyed this movie and easily recommend it to horror fans.

9 out of 10.
