Interesting.
The story goes that there's this loner guy who is nice and normal outside of being a loner. Everyone in town loves him and tries to hook him up, but he seems to shy or scared. Then one day he reveals that he has met and is dating a girl. Unfortunately, the girl turns out to be a sex doll. (One of those realistic ones.)
This is more drama than comedy, which is not exactly how the previews portrayed it. Still, there are a lot of laughs simply because of people's reactions and the situations that arise. I should point out that the situations aren't like slapstick type of comedy, but more subtle. This isn't Dumb and Dumber or Napoleon Dynamite, you'll need a bit more brain pan to see the humor here.
Beyond that, there's a pretty tragic story here about the frailty of the human mind and how our childhoods can affect the rest of our lives. (Don't worry, that's not a spoiler.)
The acting is really solid by everyone involved. In fact, the only negative thing I can say about the performers is that my wife was distracted by the horrific 70s style clothing and multiple main characters who don't appear to have showered throughout the filming of the movie.
This movie will not appeal to everyone. A good rule of thumb is if you've seen the previews and read this review, yet you still want to see it, you'll like it.
I would easily recommend it to anyone with the maturity level to appreciate that, while funny, this is not a comedy about a guy dating a sex doll. Excellent acting, an original idea, and a well written screenplay.
7 out of 10.
