I hate to admit this, but I think Val Kilmer is a little underrated as an actor.

Just depends on where they go with it. I don't think I've EVER seen a comedy based on a secret US super science lab.

You just have to look at the news. Security at DOE installations are a joke. Here's a model employee

Real Genius was one of the better 80s/90s movies, but for some reason it's not the huge hit that others became.
As for Val, he's definitely underrated. One of his faults that has kept him from becoming a bigger star is that he's apparently a real asshole to work with on set. They say he's a perfectionist.
