If you haven't seen the first one, you have no business seeing this one.
That being said, I liked the first one better. This sequel suffered a bit from the problem that hurt Blade's "flow". Everybody got too damn powerful.
Whatever happened to the protagonist having to fight incredible odds? It seems like with Blade and Underworld, the protagonist is the bad ass while the villain is the one fighting against the overwhelming odds.
The storyline here picks up right where the original left off. Kate Beckinsdale is back in the the leather as a vampire death dealer who is trying to save her lover, the only hybrid between a vampire and werewolf. This time, the original vampire is out to conquer the world...or something like that.
Kate is easily the most underrated actress in Hollywood. Not only is she just incredibly beautiful, but she's the most believeable action star in years, and a good actress on top of that.
This film is wall to wall action and violence, but despite that and Kate, it can't be saved from the writing. Not that it's horrible, it's just that it seems forced. Everything that made the original great is missing here. The good characters like Lucient, the unexplored world of vampires and lycans, the mysteries behind the powers of Michael and the elders, etc.
All are used and exposed here. That'd be fine if it were done well, but unfortunately, it's not. It's too bad too, because I would have loved to see more from this world. The way they leave it, well, let's just say they'd better be fighting X-Men in the next one because nobody else would give them a fight.
5 out of 10. (Great action, good acting, vampires, lycans, but not a great story.)
