Alrighty, which one makes the most cash over the long term given I'll most likely be doing this solo.

& how would I go about getting started on either of them?

Why not consider missions?

Mining is good if you've got the ship for it. Like a Mining Barge. Something with multiple turrets and a big fat cargo hold.

For trading all you need is the big fat cargo hold, and an interest in flying long boring distances to make cash. I've got a spreadsheet I update with key trade goods everytime I change regions, in order to keep on top of the best buy and sell prices available. If you don't enjoy that sort of monetary minutia, it'd get boring fast.

My connection makes them more volatile than I'd like. However, considering the inherent boredom involved in mining & trading, I may stick w\ the missions & just run them in something inexpensive like a Merlin.

Well, when I've been dropped in the middle of missions, my ship has always been warped out to a safe place.

Once, though, my game "Froze" in that it thought it was connected, but I could do NOTHING. I could change my view, look around but no weapons would launch, nothing happened, and I came back as a pod.

As for missions:
Doing level 3 missions with a 35 Quality agent I am making roughly 1.5mil/hour in bounties/mission payouts.

This does not include LP payouts (~750/hour) which translate into 25-40mil per 15k (thus 300-500k/hour)
This does not include loot, which varies, but I would estimate at 500k-1mil per hour (mainly driven by a few 1-5mil items I've gotten).

So I'd estimate missions make me about 2mil/hour right now. Which, according to eBay, is worth about 50 cents.
