I wouldn't say the bank error landed him in jail. It was thinking no one would miss $30k that resulted in some bad decision making that landed him in jail.

Wife ended up with a huge auto deposit paycheck (like 3 or 4 times normal) once and first notified the bank and then HR to ask about it. Turns out they retro'd her pay on a pay raise because they'd missed doing her eval for over a year. Even at that, she waited until after the next pay period before she spent any of the extra she'd gotten.

This guy didn't look like a brain trust, however.

It was clearly not his and he knew it. Much different situation than the one you described.

I've known people who have gotten mysterious infusions of money and were wise to not spend it.

You'd have to go to more than a bit of trouble to get away with this. Maybe leak out info to someone you know so your identity gets "stolen."
