My response would be a simple, "Go Fuck Yourself."
People confirm and then miss events. It happens. It might be rude, but it happens. Had she said her son came down with the flu, what then?
Instead of attacking a child's family because he'd rather spend time with his grandparents, she should have asked the people running the event to deduct that child from the bill.
