I doubt she was impressed with his display of "love".
She was probably thinking, "WTF am I supposed to do with 99 iPhones? Why would he waste his money this way? He could have bought a bigger ring or a house!"

Yeah, I don't know what to think about this. He was a dumbass... but it seems he meant well... but he sure is stupid.... and maybe she made him think they had a great relationship.... but what an idiotic public display....
Tough one to call.

I bet this is one of those cases where it's some guy with no social skills into some girl and hoping to buy her love. They've never dated, they've never been friends, they're just "colleagues" and he's kind of sad. The story uses the word "girlfriend" in the second paragraph, but I doubt that's accurate. At least this is how the story plays out in my head, given no further contradictory information.
