Is there a violation of the First Amendment here?

Absolutely.

Is the government right in forcing service providers to withhold certain information?

No. Unless we are in an official war declared by Congress upon a foreign nation, then nothing involving "national security" should be able to trump the first amendment, IMO.

I agree. But this won't change anything, I don't imagine. Twitter (and all the others) will probably end up saying, "assume we're having to give them everything" which will pretty much be the truth and then none of this will matter. They're fully disclosed and it's just official at that point.

Even if the SupCourt determines the NSA can't do it, obama will just sign some shady executive order to do it, anyway.

It appears that SCOTUS already said it's okay to have secret laws and non-disclosure of things under threat of prison, so I can't really say that I'd even trust the Supreme Court saying they've outlawed it.

I don't. This is about the only place I talk to anyone in the digital world at all.

And we all know that Gordo's dimed us all out to the feds to keep them off his porn ring.
