They "were bored" so they killed him.
This is huge national news both here and in Australia right now. Australia is even saying they should boycott trips to the U.S. over this incident.

Having spent some time in Oklahoma, I'm tempted to say I can understand the impulse. That place is powerful boring.

That's my general feeling about the Hunger Games. The Running Man, on the other hand, would be awesome.

“People thinking of going to the USA for business or tourists trips should think carefully about it given the statistical fact you are 15 times more likely to be shot dead in the USA than in Australia per capita per million people,” Fishcher said.
This is only because Australia doesn't let their black people anywhere near their population centers.
