I thought google did their hiring by putting a really hard equation on a billboard with a solution that is the phone number to call the google hiring department.
Which I guess is a good idea if they are looking for a mathematician.

It sounds like the Google "programming teacher" the link references got in the door as something else, then convinced himself that this techie thing isn't that hard. This is mainly due to companies deluding themselves into thinking any skill besides coding somehow complements and increases your ability to code, and passing that on to their employees. Most often, the dudes at companies who decide that have never written a fucking line of code in their life.
While on the benefits team, I was assigned a project that involved matching up hundreds of Googlers’ names with their corresponding office locations and job titles. I quickly realized that a few simple programming scripts could probably speed up my work and reduce errors. The only problem was, I had no clue how to write a program.
This dude was hired at Google in '08. In five years, you aren't going from "economics degree" to "programming guru." The first hint that he's a moron is this:
I began to teach myself the programming language Python, which is known for its clarity of syntax and friendliness to beginners.
In addition, it looks like he teaches programming to non-programmers.

That would actually be kind of funny. Google has a similar interview process when compared to other techie giants like MS. The questions they ask vary a bit, but the thing that is vastly different than MS is their reaction to candidates' responses. Microsoft systematically filters out people who show any sign of individualism or creativity. Google hires, brainwashses, then assimilates them. A buddy of mine visited one of their corporate campuses and described it as "reminiscent of a Scientology compound."
