TL;DR: a man shoots a woman, in a residential area near a shopping center, then a few hours later shoots himself.

But what gets me is: they put all the nearby schools on "lockdown." Why? Are we this scared and helpless?

The shooting, as far as I know, had nothing to do with schools or children at all.

Cuz it happened in a fancy part of Raleigh, so people get paranoid.

I still think school "lockdowns" are idiotic, just because that's how I am.

Dude, think of the children. Except the college students.
North Carolina State University was not locked down, school officials said, because police "determined (the shooter) was not a threat to campus."

My kid's kindergarten went on lockdown when the local bank was robbed, but then the robbers were still at large and the bank that was robbed was about a half mile away from the school, in a quiet neighborhood.
