I expect you'll be seeing heavily armed teams on American cargo ships in that area now.

And as tragic and pointless as these people's deaths were, I have to wonder why they were there. Everyone has been warned away from that area, so why take your yacht anywhere near it?

Maritime Law law says ships can't be armed. The UN would get upset.

I'd rather be armed and have the UN upset at me from miles away than be unarmed and have pirates upset at me from feet away. Seriously, did ancient caravans travel without armed escorts through known hostile territory?

I think the US Coast Guard enforces it, which is where you have the problem, since they can board and search you any time they want within X miles of US soil.
