I will just be surfing the net and all of a sudden my DVD pops open. I am not doing anything that uses my dvd at the time. It isn't causing an issues just more curious on why it would just open on its own. I will also walk into the room and the drive will be open. It doesn't happen each time I use my PC either.

The main reason I am asking is that I would like to rule out that my house is haunted.

Someone else I know just asked me about this as they're having the same issue.

It could be a number of things, including a virus, corrupted driver, bad eject button on your drive, a power issue, etc.

Take care of the easy ones first:
1. Check your startup menu (both in the Windows start menu and under msconfig) for anything dealing with burning CDs/DVDs first and get rid of them.
2. Go the Windows Update site and see if there's a new driver available for your drive. Check the manufacturer's website as well.
3. Grab Anti-MalWare Bytes, install it, update it, and then let it scan your system. Remove anything it finds.

Also, keep note of what programs you have open when it's popping open.

My DVD burner started having problems right around the time that Starforce DRM scheme was out that reportedly had the potential to damage dvd burners. I didn't connect the dots at the time, but I am always loading some game, or another.

The tray has a hard time opening/closing 80% of the time, and I usually need to use a paperclip and the manual release button to get it open.

Sound like a bad eject button being set off by vibration if it's happening as you walk into the room.

If you power down the PC, and the drive still opens when you walk in the room, revisit the haunting thing.
