This is one of those "end life crisis" movies with Robert Redford, and Nick nolte. Redford is a writer who decides to hike the Appalachian Trail, his harpy of.a wife is super negative about it, and Nolte is the only friend he has that will go with him.
There weren't any significant lessons learned, And I'm not sure what the point of the movie was.
