Time to start looking at flight sticks on amazon.

The words ‘free-to-play’ in gaming can often be replaced with three other words, ‘pay-to-win’, and for fans of Star Wars and/or the X-Wing and TIE Fighter games, this is going to be an instant concern. Star Wars Attack Squadrons will have players earning points after successful matches which will allow them to unlock new items and upgrades, so it’s fairly safe to assume that there’s going to be a paid option for wallet warriors. Let’s just hope its as well balanced as some of its other F2P PC brethren.
Nooooooooooooooooooo!!!
However with DICE busy on Battlefront 3 and BioWare hopefully making a new KOTOR, it seems that Disney decided to give this to a brand new studio, Area 52 Games. The Area 52 Games website is incredibly unhelpful and tells us bugger all except that they need a Senior Producer and Server Engineer. Scary stuff.
I'm reserving judgement like a nuke during the zombie apocalypse.

League of Legends did it right with the free-to-play, so I will reserve judgement.
Hopefully there will be a box for my shelf that gives me $40 worth of perk right off the bat.
It better take a stick as input, though. If not then it is bullshit.

Wtf-ever. If it's good enough, I will write a fucking Windows joystick driver if I need to.

Free-to-play suggests online-only.... I don't like that. I played X-Wing/Tie Fighter/ XWvTF because they were fun solo games. I am excited because of new solo games, except high-res.
Kicking all y'all's asses in multi is just icing. Can't wait to hear Cake complain that the physics are all wrong.

F2P with meaningful upgrades always means pay to win. The only question is do you have the option to pay to win with dollars or can you only play to win with time. LOL works because those upgrades are in such tiny increments that they don't really matter nearly as much as experience and skill.
I will remain hopeful for this game.

There are no first person views of the cockpit. I'm guessing it's all third person flying with the mouse. No joystick required, or really supported. Free to play will be catering to the masses rather than making a good space combat simulator. And the masses don't have joysticks.

well not with that attitude

Well, crap.
Last good game along these lines I played was one of the Wing Commander games. There's a franchise in need of a new sequel.

Always liked Privateer more than WC.

I always crushed the Emporer's secret missions like a boss.
I also remember having to give up on Tie Advanced v Tie Advanced dogfight because we were literally chasing each other in circles and never getting in range for guns/missiles.
Optimistically hopeful.

I distinctly remember the first TIE Advanced v. TIE Advanced dogfight I had. Took for-fucking-ever. Not nearly as bad as the first TIE Defender v. TIE Defender one.

I've loved the privateer type of games since Elite. That's something that needs a refresh. And not a boring EO-MMOG.

EVE was like the anti-Privateer.

I wonder how you make Privateer real-time without turning into EO though.

It wouldn't mesh well with the MMO environment and fleet battles that take a few work shifts to resolve.
