Anyone here ride motorcycles, have a motorcycle license, etc?

I'm interested in learning. Have a couple of OK friends with bikes. My BIL has lots of motorcycles, but I kinda hate him.

Seems like a cheaper way to go fast than a sports car. But a bit more dangerous.

Unless I was doing a lot of off-roading or couldn't afford much gas I never really saw the point.

You criticizing people about reading is like OJ giving anger management classes.

Motorcycles are both cool and dumb. There is a freedom about them, but you can feel the same on a Schwin.

They're also death machines that increase your odds dramatically of getting into an accident. So why risk it? Women don't typically buy them, which tends to prove they're more about proving some macho bullshit.

Unless you're adapting the lifestyle of a bike gang member, it doesn't make a lot of sense buying a bike.

Dirt bike riding is a possibility as well. I already have fancy bicycles, motors are different.

Cakedaddy took up dirtbiking in his 40's, as well. It sort of makes sense to start doing that stuff when your body starts being more brittle.

I can only give you my view of them from when I was riding. I wasn't much interested in riding to and from work on it. Memphis traffic was dangerous enough in a car. But for weekend rides through the country, they were awesome. And sorry, but comparing the freedom of riding a motorcycle to the freedom of riding a Schwin is like comparing the most toe curling blow job to spanking it in the john with a Victoria Secret catalog.

It's not for everyone. And some people catch a fever for them more than others. I enjoyed riding, but it didn't really grab me as hard as it does others. If I had the money to invest in another bike and the time, I would do so again. My recommendation to someone in your shoes would be to endure your BIL enough to see if he'd let you ride with him after some instruction. Tour the country side in your area. That's where you'll decide if you really have the love for it. You tend to have an awareness of the road and your surroundings on a motorcycle that you don't have in a car.

BIL lives 400 miles away, so he's more of a potential advice giver than a learn from or borrow bike.

I agree with Vince's first paragraph entirely... I bike to work sometimes, but it's a lot more fun biking around the countryside.

Just to clarify dirt bikes are a much different beast and activity than riding a Harley to work.

Commuting... I commute to work 3 times a week, 5.5 miles each way, one road is 5 miles of that commute. It's almost a nothing commute.

My wife said she would consider it.

The main attraction of a motorcycle over a sports car is that, quite frankly, I could buy a motorcycle and not even notice it. Whereas a sufficiently fun and reliable sports car would put a dent in the budget.

Has your wife yet said, "Just have a mid-life-crisis affair like other men, it's safer," yet?
