Watching some "old" movies with the kid that have a little more subtlety than Pacific Rim, now that he's getting a little older.
Forget what I said about "subtlety." The most interesting thing about this movie is Travolta playing a bad guy for the first time, if I recall correctly, with his newfound Tarentino coolness and fame. His rival is Christian Slater. They play off ok against each other.
As far as the movie goes, there are some silly things like how a bunch of military guys ride into war on a commercial helicopter and they actually call it a "gunship."
But it was still ok.
Oh also I think it was a little strange about how a national park ranger sees an Air Force plane fly over her head, and a pilot ejects, and when she finds him she puts a gun directly at his head and tells him to surrender. Wut?
