I'm at a complete loss at how the IRS calls them a religion when they have hard evidence that their founder openly speculated, "Hmm, inventing a religion is a great way to get rich."

We don't have primary source material from Jesus, Zoroaster, Abraham, etc. that explicitly says the same thing. Yes, it's because the faithful probably destroyed those documents, if they ever existed, and also there's the thousands of years of translation, censorship, blah blah blah, to contend with, and Scientology is modern. But them's the breaks.
