HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.
Executive producer Dan Fogelman said it's not unrealistic to imagine a woman playing in the major leagues.
"I think this is going to happen in my lifetime," he said. "I think the right young woman is going to come along, I think it's going to happen sooner than later. … When it happens, that young woman becomes the biggest story in the country overnight."
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

Here's a conspiracy theory for you:
Every network takes turns throwing some show out there about empowerment for a sex, race, religion, etc. that they know will bomb, but they have to show that they're "trying". That has to be the explanation for this show, right?
I mean, I get the female lead part since women are the majority in this country and in the world. So that's a plus. If this show has any success, it will be because of women.
However, they lose me right away with her being black. It seems like they're pandering. I have no issue with a minority in the lead, but clearly they should have selected a Hispanic actress. If we labeled sports based on what races play them, baseball is the Hispanic sport. Not to mention they're a larger segment of the population, which would have been a perk. Point being, why wouldn't you cast someone who's going to appeal to the population that cares about baseball?
Speaking of baseball, the sport they picked is also curious. Baseball is no longer America's pastime and is well behind football and basketball in popularity. Football is a ratings juggernaut that this show will be going against. Actual professional baseball struggles against football, but a scripted TV show will succeed because...?
Also, it's not counter-programming because it's still sports. Thus, if they're going for a sports audience, they'll be busy watching actual sports and won't be in the mood for a baseball show as baseball season is over.
Again, I just don't understand some of the decisions made here. Of course, this is the same network that cancelled Firefly and green-lit The Pitts, which featured a character with a pipe through his head.

Women being the majority of the population means exactly dick when the majority of your target audience are males.

But their target has to be females because the majority of males will be watching football when this show airs, and it has a female lead.

Statements like this lower your credibility across the board.

I need to figure out what Batman Forever-inspired, Riddler-constructed brain drain device is used to trick people into thinking that show was worth more than a drunken thought right before a booze and acid-induced blackout.

I rewatched Firefly again recently. Still awesome. Hatred of Fox reaffirmed.

FOX actually green lit a series that stars a black girl who makes it to the major leagues as a pitcher for the Padres.
It premieres Sept 22nd. I'm amazed it hasn't been cancelled yet. Who do they think will be watching this show?
And why is it ok for a woman to play in a men's league, but not vice versa? I mean if they made a movie about a white guy joining the NBA it'd be a comedy, not a drama.
"Equality"...

I could swear this was discussed in some other thread.

Sounds about right. The Padres ain't got shit to lose doing that for real now.
if they made a movie about a white guy joining the WNBA...

Fixed. Bosom Basketball Buddies.

Merged the threads and renamed Malcolm's original post.
Malcolm, try to include the titles of movies/shows so it's easier to search for them.
Anyway, this show was predictably cancelled.
