Interesting they are making the movies tie-in when the game tie-ins, while a lot of fun, felt like an afterthought.

Is there any game-IP-turned-movie that hasn't been indulgent, masturbatory shit?

Can't think of one.

I still say the best gaming movie is Mortal Kombat. That should be an easy bar to surpass but damned if it's not there 20 years after the fact.

I am hopeful that since Valve has turned everyone else down the movies have a chance to be good.

The problem I see is that a plot written for a game is very unlike one written for a movie. They have to excel at different things, and game plots don't have to explain themselves or make sense all the time because you're distracted by the manshooting. When you try that in a movie, you usually get a crappy movie.

Portal's horrific, rapey plot is so far isolated from the physical comedy inherent in its gameplay that shitty aggregator websites are still pointing out elements that players may have missed, and trying to map that to a film script worries me.

How was Portal "rapey"? Seriously, am I forgetting something in Portal 2?

Video game and movie plots are obviously different, but Half-Life is different from Doom, Dungeon Siege, Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, and the vast majority of other games turned movies.

Half-Life has a far more detailed story with lots of dialogue. Granted, the original wasn't Shakespeare, but the universe has been fleshed out and given lots of content. I'm keeping my expectations low, but knowing Valve turned everything down for the longest time due to bad stories, and the fact that JJ is working on it gives me some hope.

I mean if there's a guy you want to hire who won't deviate from the plot...

JK Simmons played Gladys's creator in a deleted voiceover. It's quite clear he assaults and probably rapes his secretary. I think he only did one take and refused to do another because the playback disturbed the fuck out of him.

I think you're referring to the deleted recording that was supposed to show the player how Caroline's mind was put into GLaDOS.

I should correct myself and say that the backstory was rapey, forcing Caroline into that role, and the first game's plot is a manifestation of her lashing out in hate and retribution for that rape.

Metaphorical rape, like.when you PK a miner in UO. Possibly even murder. Not literal rape.

Of course, but the vibe was apparently strong enough that an actor who plays sociopaths professionally refused to do the lines.

True enough. Can you imagine him in the recording booth that day, and hearing it out of context?

Portal announcement coming soon.

I wonder if Valve is waiting on JJ to do a HL movie before releasing a new game in the series?
