Syfy has actually made a miniseries that isn't a joke. I've watched the first episode of the 3 episode mini-series, and what I can remember from the book I read 25 years ago, it's pretty dead-on. My kid and I are both enjoying it.
It is airing over and over on Syfy if you can DVR it, and I think I saw it available to watch on their website.
