Yet another origin movie for King Kong.

In related news, it looks like a deal is being made to put Kong and Godzilla into the same universe so they can meet on the big screen again.

I fully expect to see them fight, then team up against a common villain.

I saw them, and it seems retarded. Isn't KK about as big as G's head?

But then maybe we'll have another "Raptor riding the T-Rex into battle" situation.

If it's new, the ape can be as big as he wants.

I've never liked Kong. We'll see if this movie changes my mind.

Me neither.... but this looks like they are changing everything, including the "beauty killed the beast" yawn fest message.

They are putting this in the Godzilla universe, yes? There is a GvKK movie coming, which is why this new KK is so massive? I liked the latest Godzilla movie. I am now willing to give this a chance.

Also this needs to be earlier in the timeline otherwise that guy saying "OMG monsters exist" is stupid.

Yes, and I'm guessing Kong will win because he's an American creation.

One of the guys on the Flickering Myth podcast claims Skull Island is his second favorite movie ever. He's the same, and basically the only, guy that didn't like Logan, so...

Eh, more than likely they have to team up to take on something "worse." I'm sure there'll be at least a couple lizard v. gorilla melees, though.

That would be the best way to make it a win-win scenario.

It would also make sense based on the story told in Godzilla. Remember he re-appeared because he's essentially nature's bouncer. Shit showed up that threatened life and needed to be handled. Thus, if Kong was such a threat, Godzilla should have already gone after him.

So, Kong could be another of nature's enforcers.

Oh yeah, I'm right. Godzilla isn't the only Toho kaiju on the table, and I bet one will play the big villainous critter.

Now that I'm back in front of a keyboard...

I imagine the initial sit-down between the producers/writers/director and Samuel L. Jackson going something like this:

P/W/D: What we'd really like to bring on camera is a complex, thoughtful, modern take on a character that's half Captain Ahab, half Colonel Kurtz.

SLJ: Fuck you, motherfuckers. I'm going to be me, you're going to pay me, and fuck you motherfuckers, you can talk to my motherfucking agent.

P/W/D: Just ... you know, whatever. We were doing a LOT of coke when those contracts were signed, so ... I guess you have some creative leeway, and ...

SLJ: You goddamned right, motherfuckin' motherfuckers. Oh, and I get to repeat a motherfuckin' line from one of my classic goddamn motherfucking movies where I honed my sweet-ass goddamned "FUCK YOU, WHITE MAN" ultra-black persona, strictly for fuckin' nostalgia's sake.

P/W/D: Uh, I mean we're going to have a hard time giving a shit about quality of dialogue in this movie, it's not going to be up for any awards, it's being released during the dead period between Christmas and summer, and ...

SLJ: Yeah man, I motherfuckin' hear you. That's why I'm going to bring my own motherfucking take on this King Kong shit. Denzel thinks King Kong ain't got shit on him. Hey, can we use that?

P/W/D: No, not without getting sued, we think.

SLJ: Alright, I wasn't in that piece of shit motherfuckin' movie anyway. When we're flying over Skull Island in those fuckin' like, motherfuckin' choppers, man, can like, some snakes be on the choppers so I can say, "Get these MOTHERFUCKING SNAKES off this MOTHERFUCKING CHOPPER?!!?!?!"

P/W/D: Look, I think we're getting really off-topic here, maybe we ought to stick to the existing storyboards ...

SLJ: Whoa, woo!!!! Yeah. I like it, I got it, I know how I want this go to. Bring on the motherfucking ape.

P/W/D: Just goddamnit.

In other news, Tom Hiddleston's character has a line that perfectly sums up his involvement.

Q: "So, why are you here?"
A: "They paid me a lot of money."

Interview with director.
And all the creatures in this, I'm proud to say. I think people will walk out and say, "I've actually never seen that before! That's a really cool design!"
No.
I know Godzilla 2 does not take place in the '70s and that's the next one in the franchise. [But] I don't really know those answers. I've been joking, I want to make a prequel that's young John C. Reilly fighting monsters with a katana and explore the relationship between [Reilly's character] Marlow and the Japanese pilot, set somewhere between the '40s and the '70s.
If the US military knew about giant monsters on Giant Motherfucking Monster Island back in the '70s, then they seemed damned clueless when giant-ass Godzilla shows up four decades later.
...you know, I love Rodan! Everyone kind of sh*ts on Rodan for some reason.
Because he sucks. Rodan is the Ringo of kaiju.

How it was supposed to open.
“So it’s World War II. A full squad comes to this beach. They’re killing each other – and then suddenly, this giant monkey [that looks a lot like the monkey from the last King Kong movie] comes out of the jungle. And they just kill it. It’s dead. And you’re sitting there going, ‘Wait, did they just kill King Kong? Did they kill the hero of this film?’ And then you’d hear a roar and see a much bigger creature – the real King Kong. That was the crazy version of me wanting to send a message that this isn’t like other King Kong movies that you’ve seen. The studio were like: ‘You can’t do that.’”

Saw it, a half-full matinee on a Thursday, weeks after it opened. Weird.

Anyway, it was ok. I am still digesting it... it didn't blow my skirt up, but it didn't drag TOO many times, and the logic of "what to look out for" wasn't consistent at all. So.

John C. Reilly stole the show, too.

I have heard that elsewhere.

I'm not too excited about this film and recently used the phrase "I'm more of a Godzilla man." I got laughed at for that. :D

When I am dragged to the zoo the monkey house is the one place I refuse to go, I sit outside and wait. I hate primates. My opinion of this movie was flavored by that bias.

My favorite Kong movie, although I hated all the rest, so...

It was fine, but stupid. Reilly was great, but Jackson's character was terrible. Why'd he blame Kong for his piss poor leadership? The other monsters were lame as hell. No logic to their actions either. I have no idea why Loki was in this movie. His character had no point.

What was with the chemical weapons that did nothing? Loki, literally, took off his mask while standing in a cloud of it.

Godzilla is still the king.
