Is this the same math that says sharing a song on the internet costs the record industry $158,000?

Probably. Hollywood math is kind of awesome. Remember how Forest Gump didn't make a profit according to Hollywood accountants.
Although, I would guess here that it's more about averages based on marketing.
Marketing is about the number of eyes that see your ad and you can put a price on that. (Let's ignore the fact that without concrete proof of purchases by folks who see your ad, the pricing is arbitrary.) So if you have 1,000 followers, they all see your tweet, so it's worth X amount of dollars to them in advertising money.
