Disclaimer:
I HATE anime. I hate the style, I hate the story lines, I hate the characters, I hate the atmosphere, I hate the backdrop, I hate the themes.

Review:
That being said, I've encountered a handful on Adult Swim that are tolerable, and even decent. The best thus far has been this one that had a 24-ep run. It's got virtually none of the traditional anime bullshit that makes me want to lie motionless and wait for turkey buzzards to mistake me for a corpse so my eyes and eardrums can be pecked out. The tiny amount that creeps in is somehow twisted at the last moment so that it's made to stand 90 degrees on its head in any one of four dimensions.

It's a sci-fi comedy and revolves around a ship run by a young Elvis lookalike

track rare aliens so they can be officially registered. Consider it a non-lethal version of bounty hunting. There are some fucked up aliens, too. Some are classics, like the shapeshifter. Others are wtf, like the species that can transform you into a stuffed animal for about 10 minutes, or the aliens who are a species of living books, or the alien that can make perfect ramen.

Elvis guy is in turn being hunted by a giant ape scientist in his ship,

One ep sees the skull guy order the giant ape to destroy a library with their new death ray so they don't have to pay overdue book fees anymore. Then there's a brilliant ep that takes on what happens when going from a 4- to 3- to 2- to 1- to 0-dimension universe.

The eps sometimes have little to nothing to do with aliens. The Elvis dude forms a band in one of them. That's it. An entire episode about the bullshit of being in a band. And it was hilarious. Also, I should mention every ep ends with the giant ape and his ship (and occasionally others) getting blown the fuck up. The series finale ranks among the best I've ever seen. It's cyclical in a genius way and had at least 3 moments that made me laugh my ass off.

Verdict:

One of the few shows I've seen, anime or otherwise, that gets better as it goes on. Not that it starts badly, but it keeps going up.
