Poster look cute. Early predictions: will it suck, or be awesome? Last Tom Cruise scifi I can remember was Minority Report, and it wasn't terrible.

Cruise's scifi track record sort of reminds me of Charlton Heston's, who did Omega Man, Soylent Green, and Planet Apes.

Oblivion is an original and groundbreaking cinematic event from the director of TRON: Legacy and the producer of Rise of the Planet of the Apes.

They're already in a hole right there.

Saw a trailer yesterday, looks like the name of the flick is just "Oblivion."

Voiceover guy says, "The aliens attacked us, and we beat them... but they destroyed half the earth." Impossible shots of land up to the tops of skyscrapers but then 1000 foot river valleys winding between them.... but whatever. A scene takes place in some stadium and Tom Cruise is pining, "The last world series was held here, 80 years ago!" or something like that, but a wide shot suggests the stadium has been in ruins at least 500 years. So question mark?

Scientology Guy is on a survey to check on the UNINHABITED earth, and... gasp.... he finds Morgan Freeman, and a bunch of his friends hiding underground. Strange shots of space humans trying to wipe out the dirty earth humans, it seems like.

All their space tech looks fresh from the Apple Store.

Ok, I am going to speculate from here, knowing absolutely nothing about the film.

Ye be warned.

The aliens actually won, but they duped the humans into thinking the humans won, and now they have the institutional humans cleansing the earth of the regular humans and tom cruise has to uncover the truth and stop it.

Here's an actual trailer. Having now seen it twice, yeah, it was superbowl/60 years ago, and now I think Cruise is a clone caretaker for the aliens that gets a fake life story built into him, like that indie movie Moon. The aliens prolly have a hard time with the earth environment so they make humans to do mop up operations.

Wow.

So anyway, this movie is perfectly serviceable. Nothing new or groundbreaking, only one quotable line that I can remember, and not a lot of fun, but it is solid scifi and I can't think of any holes aside from the fact that the aliens "destroyed the moon" and that caused tectonic plate upheaval and screwed up the planet... but.... the moon is still where it is supposed to be, just cracked into pieces. Its gravitational pull would not have been changed all that much, all the mass is still there a'pullin. Or, a'gravity-wellin. What have you.

But anyway, it is certainly an unreliable narrator.

Worth seeing, once.

It was worth one viewing, but Tom Cruise is almost impossible to root for these days.

Finally saw it and it was okay.

Semi-spoiler, but I will word it vaguely: I do wonder what happened next to all the other Tech and Support that were out there. Do they all eventually end up in the same place? Could be ... awkward.
