Watched this on Hulu Plus. Documentary on Gene Roddenberry and the influence of Star Trek on culture and the Star Trek fans.

Produced and starred in by Gene and Majel's son, Eugene ("Rod"). Rod was in his late teens when his father died and never really "got" the whole Star Trek thing. So he was trying to connect to his dad using this project.

Pretty good documentary. For some reason Gene Roddenberry always reminded me of L. Ron Hubbard. The 70's sideburns and horrible 70's dress style was part of it, but listening to Gene talk about his vision of the 23rd century sounded a LOT like a cult leader.

Also, Gene was pretty much a douche bag.

Worth watching for free for anyone that has Hulu Plus

I saw this on Netflix a while back.... I had a hard time getting into it because the guy obviously used to be a douche son, and only after his father died did he take any interest in what his father did. Ungrateful little turd.

He readily admits that he was a punk ass. Goes back to what is modeled for the kids, though. Gene was bragging about cheating on Majel within 7 or 8 days after marrying her. And had been banging her for years while married to his first wife.

I forget which one of Gene's co-workers told Rod (paraphrasing) that it must have been hard to see his dad put the passion and caring into defending his creation of Wesley Crusher in a way that he never gave to his own son.

I do think Rod rebelled against Star Trek and his dad, but honestly I think that was a self defense in his (and his mother's) not seeming all that important to him.

I found it sad that he had to go to the Star Trek universe in order to connect to his father.
