Communism is simply "socialism" now?

Forgot to post this a few months ago. Random flock of wild turkeys outside the kid's school.

Public schools do marching bands and all you can do is play a woodwind or some brass and maybe a drum.

In private school you have symphony orchestras.

Here's my 6th grader on the cello behind the ginger girl and in front of his BFF, the little chinese girl on the violin.

Weird directing decision there. You didn't frame him. Were you trying to capture as much of the orchestra as you could?

This sounded exactly like my oldest's recent concert. She plays the viola.

It was a rehearsal, I had just sat down and wasn't expecting to be recording, I was way up in the top row, and when I decided to get closer, they were done.

Funny aside:

We still pay school taxes for the local school, obviously, even though he doesn't attend.

BUT, there's a stipulation that since we are no longer using the bussing, we are entitled that portion of the money back... about $200, give or take. So I filled out the paperwork at the school board the other day and supplied his final report card from the private school to prove he went there (the report card was 8 pages long, by the way. Each teacher writes a page about your kid... it's not just "Grade: A Comment: A pleasure to have in class.") You know.... actual evaluation. Crazy, right?

Anyway, I got the rejection letter today. "State law stipulates...." yaddah yaddah... they only need to pay if the new commute is less than 30 minutes. They determined in 2008 it was 31.5 minute commute to this school, and therefor we do not get the transportation money back. You could feel the "and fuck you" in the guy's signature.

I guess if I was in his position I'd be just like an insurance company or casino, any means of getting out of the payout would be used.


I'm sure the 8 page report card with glitter and smiley faces didn't help. "HOW DO THEIR TEACHERS POSSIBLY HAVE TIME TO WRITE THIS MUCH?!"

Fancy schmancy private school closed today for weather, first time in 4 years. Sub-zero temps, even before the wind chill is added.

Lame because they didn't decide until 6:45 am, after we were already up and caffeinated.

Also lame because we aren't pussies and I'd STILL only wear a light jacket, out.

My 12 year old was invited to apply for admission to Northwestern, and is presently taking the ACT surrounded by high school kids.

Is this one of those summer programs for smart kids? My brother and I did that at Duke, but we took the SAT, not the ACT. Nice!

I made the choice, I chose ACT. Less stress.

Were they closed Friday?

Went in to pick him up at school yesterday, I went in because he had cello practice after.

On the way past reception, I saw some "gun control now" type signs. Oh yeah... It was protest day.

So on the way home, I asked him if any students walked out in protest.

"Yes."

I.asked it he walked out.with them.

"No."

"Why not?"

"Because it was during my break and it seemed stupid. I went to the cafeteria and got a muffin."

That's my boy.

* - Same hemisphere only. You can pick from Northern or Western.

By the way, you welshed on this promise when we were discussing the Bonaire trip. Like a dirty welshman.

You never explicitly picked a hemisphere, so I entered into a jet-share with Chris Brown instead.

We're middle class trash. She goes to a suburban public school.

I figured based on the instrument, it had to be a private school.

Yeah, no violas at our public school.
