The legs look too gimpy to be bipedal. But ripping off the Statue of Liberty's head and chucking it does imply that it had hands.

Maybe it could stand on its two legs if it tried, but was designed to be on more than two. Dogs can stand on their hand legs for a few seconds. The torso (I suppose) does look a bit big to be supported by the legs. & who knows if it ripped off the head? Maybe it hit it w\ its tail. But, small legs + big torso + (maybe) hands that can decapitate statues gives me a couple thoughts.
1) Quadruped that can stand on its hind legs occasionally, like a dog or something.
2) (Maybe more than) quadruped that can stand on its hind legs but it designed to walk on all its legs & has fantastically powerful tail, like a komodo dragon w\ a bit more power in the hind legs.
Then again, this is a shitload of speculation for a few seconds of footage not of the highest quality.

Read an interview with the director. He says that they'd redo a scene 30 times because the actors had the cameras and nobody told them what to shoot. They'd watch the footage later to see what they got.

Well, one of the taglines has something like "Something has found us first" in it, so space is a safe bet.

I don't think it's aliens. I think it's going to be more like Reign of Fire, where the creatures were here all along.
That new video of the oil rig that was attacked had a map which pointed out (unnecessarily for a news broadcast) that the rig was on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. So I think they came from below.
With all the people in lab coats, with armed/masked security, it's possible that it's some sort of man-made abomination as well. But I think they were just secretly studying the beasties they found, and were discovered themselves.
I hope there's no "what really killed the dinosaurs" reference. That's a really tempting cliche.

Did I miss another thread for post-release comments on this? Or am I the first to bother?
Spoilers:
I went to see it in the theater, but had to leave about the time the bridge came down. It was making me way too sick. So I finally just got around to watching it at home, and on the whole it wasn't worth the nausea. Sure the special effects are some of the best I've ever seen, and completely seamless. But the characters were so annoying I was glad each time one died (especially the whiney self-centered dick carrying the camera). I'm going to go throw up now.

Just watched it on BluRay, first time I've watched the movie since 2007.
- I had forgotten how annoying these city people are.
- This movie would be a perfect prequel to Pacific Rim which is about giant monsters coming out of the ocean. "Cloverfield" could be the first one.
- As for the origins of the beastie, you know how intermixed with the footage of the night of the attack there are clips from months before when the guy and girl go to Coney Island? There's a clip right at the end where you can see the ocean in the background, and something big falls out of the sky and crashes into the water. Subtle, but can't be an accident.
