What's the deal with the dice rolls?

All too often I have a 61% chance of being successful at something only to critically fail.

Using saves, I just attempted Computer Science on a machine that told me I had a 61% chance of success. I attempted it 12 times.

I was successful twice. I critically failed 5 times (where it breaks beyond repair) and just failed the rest.

61% my ass.

What's the crit fail chance?

Where does it show that? I crit fail at tasks FAR more than just fail, and before you ask, no I don't use any of the perks or whatever that come with negatives.

I also HATE the stupid Kiss Ass, Smart Ass, Hard Ass, dialogue "skills".

Very, very stupid and being without the specific one you need at a certain point can fuck up your options for completing missions.

Swear I saw a chart on it somewhere or the progression is linear and I spreadsheet'd it out one day. Son-of-a-bitch. I have everything in my spreadsheet except crit fail %. Well, let's assume that goes in a similar direction as success, failure, and crit success: a lookup in a 2-D table of your skill level x item level. If the item is level X, you've got a 25% chance of success if you're at skill level X-1. If you've got parity, then it's about 60%. If you assume crit failure follows a curve similar to crit failure, then I'd say you're talking 10%.
I also HATE the stupid Kiss Ass, Smart Ass, Hard Ass, dialogue "skills".

That does seem like it's a way of duplicating a "speech" skill, which Fallout never did.

Nice game, although unpolished in places.

The story line is excellent and I thought the combat and leveling were really satisfying.

The unpolished stuff had to do with skills late game, team friendly AI (they're really dumb), some minor story line glitches, and some other small things. Nothing that stopped me from enjoying the game.

LOTS of content here too, so if you get it, expect a deep RPG trek, not a day or two of RPG-lite bullshit.

I would definitely put it on a "must play" list for RPG fans. Especially to prep for Wasteland 3???

Although, before you start consult some online guides or ask about character creation. The right party is critical to success. Here's a primer: 3 assault and 1 energy or 2 assault 1 energy and a sniper (you can find a good sniper later). The language skills are critical at times, so put one on each party member and get it leveled. Worry about leveling weapons last. Double up on surgeon, but you only need one medic.

Recommended.

Halfway or so through the Ag Center. I forgot how much your team runs on bullets and first aid kits.

You choose the AG Center? So did I.

What was the other choice? Water treatment or something?

Highpool. Ag Center is closer. I'm also still infinitely pissed you can't split your team or double up with the six trainees sitting in the fucking Ranger Center while either the entire region's food (Ag Center) or water (Highpool) supply gets torched. Come the fuck on, you're already sending out one squad of rookies, why the fuck not two?

You're right. It's cool that the story makes you choose, but food and water are kind of important. You'd think the Rangers could spare some folks to do the one you didn't choose.

Cleared out the Ag Center, the three places where dumb-ass sent the pigeons, and Highpool (pretty much where I was before I stopped last time). I'm playing on difficulty level 3/4, and it's imperative to keep with the weapon curve. I'm wondering where I'm going to find all the cash to buy armour, ammo, and the latest instruments of destruction. Ammo's getting far more important.

I've got my characters' skills set up such that each knowledge and general skill is covered, even without NPC help. Speaking of NPCs:

1) fuck this "going rogue" shit during combat ... absolutely ruins my shots and preparation every time.
2) Rose from the Ag Center is halfway decent as a sniper.

Combat strategy thus far:

1) take cover (if available and enemy has guns)
2) otherwise set up a firing line with two shotgunners in the middle flanked by medium-range support with an avenue for the second sniper to hit enemies as they chase the primary sniper
3) send out primary sniper to score an early hit at long range and aggro enemies, have him run back to cover/firing line

I get enough AP built up so I can jump ranged enemies from behind cover or get plenty of bullets slamming into melee ones before they close. Working well at the moment. Finally got into the Ranger Center at the old citadel. Looks like the next gen of combat equipment is sold there. I keep taking scrap rewards over promotion acceleration. Figure there's enough things to blow up out there and only so much cash I've got right now. Totally banking the requisition form I got from the general.

Current gun skill spread:

- everyone has energy weapon
- everyone except snipers have assault rifle
- one heavy weapons dude
- two shotgunners
- snipers have pistols as backup
- threw in a SMG skill onto one of the medium-range dudes for the hell of it

Current healing skill spread:

- one primary surgeon with one backup surgeon
- one primary field medic
- Rose has so many damn skills points per level to spend, I'm making her the backup field medic

Current skill plan:

Each character is going to have eight skills developed. Should give me the potential for 2 at skill level 9, 2 at 8, 3 at 6, and 1 at 7 to boot. That's not counting the shrines and crap I find to get extra points. There's not much of an incentive to get a knowledge skill above level 8. I assume I'll spend the 9s on combat, medical, or leadership (fucking rogue NPCs).

Selling various things to the dudes at Ranger HQ is cool, but I spent most of my cash on armour upgrades. Now I need ammo to get past the goddamned honey badgers in the fucking mine.

Speaking of honey badgers and mines, can someone tell me how, in spite of being able to defuse wasteland IEDs of every sort and stripe, I can't fucking set one myself for the furry bastards to waltz over?

"Hey, what if we didn't lob the explosives at the target and instead just tied some wire to it while buried in the ground? Then they could walk over it."

"Nah, it'll never catch on."

Mine's cleared. That last wave of half dozen honeys was a bitch. Haven't had to bust out explosives yet.

At the point where I can go to Damonta and attach the second repeater. Have elected to clear things up north by the Rail Nomad Camp first. Topekan area is quiet now, going through rail thief territory onto the Atchisons. Dismissed Rose, found and dismissed Takiyuki. I like how the booted NPCs go back to Ranger HQ now instead of disappearing. Current setup is my four, Angela, Ralphy, and Scotchmo. Major weapons upgrades. Could stock up a bit on ammo if I need to. A bit past level 12. Only 38 to go before I hit the ceiling. Observation: pumping weapons skills up much above 5 or 6 seems overkill. Does it help with precision shots?

I can see myself replaying this on difficulty level 4/4 (Supreme Jerk) and taking the perks into account. Wish I would've poked north around Ranger HQ in the beginning instead of south. Feels like it was the place to go after Ag Center, based on enemies and gear available.

Everything north of the Ranger Citadel is cleared except a few spots in Darwin Village (which I found disappointingly tiny).

Things I'm noting so far:
1) I went way overboard on intelligence and skills in terms of depth.
2) Cash is starting to flow in much more readily. I wonder when the next price jump happens.
3) Those three rangers sitting outside the citadel never do anything, they exist in case your team is below full strength.
4) Yep, I went south way too quick. Wrecker stronghold wasn't bad, but the mine felt a bit above my pay grade.
5) Always note words in italic text descriptions.
6) Higher difficulty level seems possible if I take perks into account and transfer some points from intelligence to other attributes.

Soon as I poke around south by the prison, fucking robots pop up back north.

Thoughts on weapons:

Assault rifles: fucking awesome. Only drawback is finding enough ammo to feed everyone. Default PC weapon.

Snipers: second most fucking awesome. Default NPC weapon.

SMGs: a bit bleh. Range is too short.

Shotguns: third most fucking awesome, if they have the right mods to increase range and perks to avoid friendly fire.

Handguns: not much damage, but surprisingly good in terms of crits and speed

Energy weapons: I was debating kicking this out of the character builds for the Supreme Jerk runthru ... then I had my first robot encounter.

Things that would make life easier:

1) A "just fucking go there" command that will insta-travel to marks on local maps where I have a clear walking lane to get there. Eat a dick, excessive walking.

2) A "put all your characters in a straight line" command so I don't have to do it manually every fight. I end up having a spare round or two after my sniper aggros, but Christ, it's tedious.

3) A "have each character take cover around here" point-and-click mechanic so I don't have to do it manually in every urban landscape.

4) A "divvy ammo type X between these characters" command. Annoying micromanagement of bullets.

In other news, wish I would've cashed in those requisition forms earlier. Turns out Mercaptain's got a limited amount of gear. Getting ready to clean out the prison/old ranger HQ. Wondering how the fuck I'm going to get in an assault the towers. Also checked and found out I've snagged all the NPCs so far. Looks like 13 in total (considering one in Ag/Highpool dies). Wow, could have a small army of 23 there if you count the 3 support rangers, other 3 thugs-turned-rangers that seem to have disappeared, and your four dudes.
