This is a short term backlash. Sony will 100% recover and there will be no overall drop in the number of units they sell. People can NOT stand up against evil game corporations. The fact that EA still exists is exhibit 1. They will complain. They will threaten. And then they will buy the console/games and nothing will change or mean anything.

Depends if MS offers a drive in their next console or not. If they do, I think Sony will feel it. If not, yes, gamers will be forced to move on, but many are already heading to Steam.

Plus, I don't know if you posted without looking at the lawsuit, but that is interesting. It's what Apple just lost in court on, so there's precedent.

You know EA was sold, right?

I feel like digital only means allowing other stores.
It's not me, it's someone else.

Currently and based on their wording so far, no. It's just the Playstation Store and nothing else.

That lawsuit is going to get interesting, especially with Stop Killing Games being a political force in the EU, Brazil, CA, and other places.

Was there this uproar when PCs went digital only?

Technically, PCs are not digital only. You can still order physical, it's just not really done.

I assume you're skimming, so let me hit the big reasons why this is different:
-Ownership is really the core part of this issue. Are we renting games or buying them? People collect disks. People lend out disks. People resell their disks, which many see as reducing the cost of a game ($60 to buy, beat in a month, trade in for $20, and the game was $40.).
-Sony is trying to kill the resell market and end trading of games. They see that as lost profit.
-Sony is also trying to force purchase from their store only. You can find examples all over of PS5 games for sale on other stores for less than the Playstation Store. However, they're all disks. It's unclear at this time if Sony will allow purchasing digital keys from other sources like GOG, Humble, etc. It seems unlikely. They'll probably allow it from publishers like Rockstar to try and give the illusion of choice, but ultimately, they will control the market.
-It has been proven Sony is lying about the amount of their sales that are digital purchases.
-Sony wants to push the concept of games expiring, ditto for accounts. If after 3 years you haven't played, they email you with a 6 month warning, if you still haven't logged in, bye bye account and all purchases associated. Since China has just ruled that such accounts are property, and other countries are looking at the same, you can see this is becoming a big legal battle. The Stop Kill Games movement is also at odds with Sony here because they believe gamers should have a right to play purchased games forever, and a lot of governments agree. The industry strongly disagrees because profit... Microsoft, just this week, stood in a CA government meeting arguing that personal Minecraft servers are illegal and piracy. This is despite the FACT that Minecraft comes with the ability to host your own server. It's, literally, always been a standard feature in the game.
-Sony recently deleted hundreds of movies from users' accounts without warning because some contract they had expired. The problem is the people who PURCHASED (not rented) the movies had no idea about that contract, and thus, just had property stolen from them by a corporation.

Over in the world of Steam, we're used to digital, but our acceptance has a LOT to do with Valve's policies. Gordon used to have a concern about what happens when they go under, but they addressed it years ago. If they were to go under, they have plans and policies in place to ensure their users get downloaded copies of all the games they own. We can buy games cheaper elsewhere and bring them to Steam.

This is legitimately consumer desire vs corporate greed, and on multiple fronts.
