Doctor Strange

As long as we recognize Lucas is washed up and most TV sucks, we'll all get along fine.

With Cumberbatch in it it won't flop. He's got too much pull for it to take a loss.

Doesn't say anything about if it will be good or not, though.

I really want to like this film, but damn I generally hate magic in movies.

It looks like they're trying to morph it into a many-worlds quantum-mechanics sort of thing. Magic masquerading as science.

Writing credits include Dan Harmon.

Maybe we'll see a paintball war or Rick and Morty in a scene.

It was good. I need a little more explanation about why "The Ancient One" did what she did.... they seemed to gloss over her reasons.

Also one of the end-credit scenes seems to happen after... or during.... a Marvel movie that hasn't happened yet. That will make sense when you see it.

I've read elsewhere that this is the best "origin story" Marvel has done so far.

OH YEAH!

I remember saying that I didn't like how cheesy the cape looked in trailers. I am glad to say there is a good reason for the cheesy cape.

Ah... you didn't know about the cape of levitation? I loved the Doctor Strange comics. Seems like they are kind of messing with the Eye. Unless they reworked it in the last couple of decades.

Years ago (like,,, when I was in middle school) Marvel released digest sized paperback volumes of some of their old titles. Don't remember how many issues were in each one, but they'd start at issue #1 and go up. That was when I discovered Doctor Strange. I knew him before he HAD a cloak of levitation -)

Not as bad as I thought but several WTF moments and plot holes.

Hmm, after a day to think it over, this movie keeps getting less good.

The only thing new I think this brought to the Marvel table was that the protagonist tried really hard to not kill peeps, and the one time he was personally responsible for a death, he wept over it.

Sounds like Clark Kent, aka Super Pussy. Maybe they can make a buddy pic about going antique shopping and watching the new "Gilmore Girls" eps while the real superheroes save the world in the background as a tertiary plot.

So we didn't know when this movie was coming out, but then we saw a commercial about it being "available" February 14th. I've even been seeing the "deleted scenes/whatever" that were only available on the BD, on facebook and stuff. We went to two places looking for the bluray so we could watch it this weekend. At the second place I googled it, turns out it was available to rent and stream this week, but the BD wasn't available for another week or two. Fucking fuckers.

I was pissed so instead I came home and pirated it.

Brilliant marketing, people.

BTW the movie is fine. Not the best movie in the history of film, but it isn't terrible. Don't know why Malcolm thinks it was terrible. Wait a minute, it's because it's Malcolm.

Yeah, I enjoyed it. The scene with Strange stealing the books and Wong listening to Beyoncé was a great payoff to several moments setting up the joke.

It was a really solid origin story despite the villain and the ancient one being on the weaker side of things.

You all caught what was important about the Eye, yes?

No, it's because the plot was fucking stupid, especially the resolution at the end and several other things in between. The villain was completely pathetic. Goddamn near anyone would've been better. Mephisto, D'Spayre, Umar, Tazza, Satannish, anyone. Kaecilius projected less of a threat than Vincent Price doing Eggman from the '60 Batman TV show.

The thing Strange did with Dormmamu or whatever was good though. That's kind of how he beats him in the comics too. Not the same trick, but always tricks.

That trick was utterly shitty. Here's how Dormammu gets around this: you don't fucking kill him, just subdue and imprison him.
