Back on topic... saw this movie. Was disappointed. They didn't shit all over the original really. I have to revisit what it takes to do a good remake. You do have to have a deep respect for the source material (which I think this guy directing did), but you also have to be bringing something new to the table. All the best parts of this were scenes that carried ghosts from the original.

Adding the family back in front and center kind of gave him a vagina. One of the great things (meaning great story telling) was the Greek Tragedy feel of the whole thing in the original. "I can feel them... but I can't remember them."

Sam L Jackson's character was a substitute for the news breaks in the original, and not a very well done one.

It was a good action flick. The effects were pretty good. But this one lacked any of the stuff that made the original a Classic.

How about remaking a movie you have a dog's chance in hell of improving? The goal of a remake shouldn't be to churn out a variation on what came before or update aspects the original had to compromise on (like special effects). However, this is often the case because that kind of shit is bankable for a couple weeks, unless you spend too much cash or are insane. That's why The Great Gatsby has six film incarnations and I guarantee there's a fucking producer out there thinking, "We need to make it seven." It's why we're going to see the third Spiderman origin movie since fucking 2002.

but you also have to be bringing something new to the table

Perhaps that idea would best be explored in a new film without bringing along a previously enjoyed movie, tacking on two or three completely unnecessary "revisions," and shoving an artistic Garden Weasel up its ass.

The son and I just watched the original, it was his first viewing. He said, "OMG it was so much better than that remake." I am so proud of him.

I can't even remember anything that happened in the remake, that's how good it was.

Well, you're ignoring the fact that those guns don't have to worry about their own safety. Thus, they have time to fully process a situation and warn someone even after a violent act.

Cops really need the stop watch from that Twilight Zone episode that stops time.

I'm proud of him, too.
