They try, he doesn't listen.

I don't think they do. I think it's probably them trying to strong arm him. I mean can you really imagine the current Republican leadership approaching Trump with kid gloves and ego stroking tactics, which is exactly how you handle a guy like him? I think they're too proud and stupid to do that.

I'd have a bit more respect if they found a way to deny it to him.

I wouldn't. It would remind me that they so terribly botched this election and ignored this freight train until it was too late so they were forced to use the nuclear option.

As far as the people voting for him, they can go off and live in third party land and self-excise while the GOP keeps the brand instead of vice versa.

The GOP brand is severely broken and was even before this election cycle. They can't afford to lose this many voters no matter how they feel about them.

And honestly, your attitude about them is exactly the problem the Republican party has. You, and they, dismiss these people as morons, despite surveys and polls showing a lot of them are simply people who are sick and tired of the same candidates over and over and not being represented.

I also don't think that gif applies. Tell Cruz to win some states and the nomination without backroom deals, then perhaps it fits.

I think everyone will be fine if Cruz wins because he knew the loopholes even though he wasn't the majority choice.

Since they apparently don't have a chance to beat the Dem nominee no matter who it is, it would really be a good time to take a cycle off and decide what the party is going to stand for, then find electable candidates who represent those virtues and groom them for 2020.

When the aliens overrun the predators, that shit is called for.

They don't want him and they never will. They want his mojo, just in another candidate. He'll never be malleable or smooth enough. The party will always be wondering when the next scandal will hit and kill their reelection chances for the upcoming cycle.

You, and they, dismiss these people as morons, despite surveys and polls showing a lot of them are simply people who are sick and tired of the same candidates over and over and not being represented.

Not mutually exclusive. I'll agree with them about the monotony of most politicians. Doesn't mean I think Trump is the, or even a, serious alternative.

I wouldn't represent them as "loopholes". Cruz went in knowing the rules. That would be like calling a quarterback sneak to win a football game a "loophole".

In an ordinary election I would agree with you that things would settle down after the convention if Cruz were to win by swinging delegates. But many Trump supporters are in some sort of weird emotional feedback loop. Whenever you start to break through to the logic side of their brain, they flare up with "yeah, but" and them start to cycle back to already discredited talking points. Cruz can't work with congress, but we're angry at the Republicans for rolling over for Obama on everything. Cruz can't work with congress because he called Mitch McConnel a liar. This from supporters of the candidate that calls Cruz "Lyin' Ted". Trump didn't file for personal bankruptcy, but rather used the existing rules to his favor by having his business file. However using the rules of the convention to swing votes to himself is Cruz cheating.

Don't get me wrong. I have no love for the Republican party and they brought this on themselves. But Cruz is as much of a part of the "Republican establishment" as Bernie Sanders is.

But back to your point, during a normal election the Republican base would be given a history lesson about how William Seward threatened to sue for having the election stolen from him. He entered the Republican convention with a plurality (though not a majority) of delegates and a pretty decent lead over his next closest competitor. But after the second vote the race got tighter and upon the third the party nod was given to ol' "Lyin' Lincoln". Yes, the Republican convention of 1860 almost went to someone other than Lincoln.

While the primaries of today are much different, the underlying rules of delegates are the same. But this sort of thing doesn't happen often enough for people to remember what they might have once known about it. Plus, Trump is supposedly bringing in a bunch of people that never had an interest in politics before. So they will certainly be behind the curve of understanding how these can work.

He was a distant dark house candidate in that one.

But Ted Cruz is no Abraham Lincoln.

Nah. He's more of a Calvin Coolidge I think.

I think Coolidge could count on one hand the number of times he felt anything in his entire life. Ted Cruz is far more vocal.

Are you sleeping with each of the candidates?

I said vocal, not smart. Fucker's name was silent cal for a reason.

I was thinking more along the lines of how they'd preside. I think Cal holds the record for vetoed legislation. If it wasn't a designated power of the Constitution he just vetoed it.

Trump's douchebag campaign manager charged with assault.

And then they hired him a lawyer that stepped down as a government prosecutor because he was accused of biting a stripper. At this point I think Trump's actually trying to throw this but his core group of voters just aren't picking up on it at this point.

Trump, who once supported abortion rights, now favors outlawing the procedure, which he called "a very serious problem," according to excerpts of an MSNBC town hall that is scheduled to air Wednesday evening. "There has to be some form of punishment," Trump said in the town hall.
From here

It's all just very confusing - you can't just alienate half of a voter base and assume it's going to go well at the general election. So very confusing, it really does seem like he's actively torpedoing support from everyone but the crazies on purpose.

Punishment? Go fuck yourself, Don. Well, honestly here ... how many Trumpers were pro-choice anyway? He's also talking about sending in troops to take out ISIS, which I'm sure wouldn't devolve into some nightmarish debacle on which we piss away billions of dollars. I assume he'll get to that after he closes the borders to all Muslims, builds a wall in between us and Mexico, and deports all the illegal aliens. I'm hoping more and more the pachyderms fuck him royally at the convention. Approximately this hard:

Anti-abortion groups said Trump's comments were at odds with their own stance. "In all the positions the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has taken around the issue of abortion, they have not called for punishment of women who've had abortions," said Don Clemmer, a spokesman for the group.

After the backlash started, Trump's campaign sought to moderate his view. "This issue is unclear and should be put back into the states for determination," Trump said in a statement provided to Reuters by email.

Later, Trump walked back his comments further to say doctors, not women, should be responsible.

Yep, that went well.
