If you really want to talk about suck, I got an email from the host saying they are upgrading their PHP to a new version in a couple months, and that I should make sure all scripting still works before the changeover day.

Anyway, I must be some sort of sucky search feature savant, because I usually don't have much trouble finding a thread I know exists

What sucks about upgrading?

There aint no upgrading this forum software. If it doesn't run on the new version of PHP, then it is dead and a decade of posts are gone.

When PHP decides to cut backwards compatibility, you're screwed?

So then it's dead.

I mean, it'll suck, but what can you do?

Get new BBS software.

Back on topic, from what have seen so far I really like the artistic style of this new movie. It almost feels like the franchise has finally matured.

Ooo, the origin story of Superman? We've never seen that before!

[/sarcasm]

I also never have a problem with search. Except when I forget to check "include older than this month", I hate that it defaults to only "this month".

Well, I never liked the ice-crystal-look of Krypton in the movie. And while there is NO replacing Marlon Brando as Jor-El, I am interested in seeing how Russel Crowe does. Ditto Glenn Ford/Costner.

So, for me, 2013 is shaping up to be an exciting movie year.

Minor spoilers within the review below...

I took a full day to figure out if I liked this movie. I have decided that I both loved and hated it.

First let me start off with the best scenes and the actor that steals the movie...everything involving Kevin Costner. Stop laughing, I'm serious. Costner absolutely nails this role.

Meanwhile, I thought Lawrence Fishburne phoned it in, and REALLY wonder why a large scene he was involved in late in the movie wasn't cut because it was pointless.

Two more actors who didn't phone it in, but they bugged me:
-Harry Lennix. He seemed oddly cast, and it's probably my fault because I'm used to him in more comedic roles, so seeing him as an authority figure in the military didn't work...again, that could just be my thing.
-Christopher Meloni. His TV work just completely took over and I have not seen a single episode of whatever show he's on. I did not buy him at all, and it didn't help that his dialogue was pretty terrible.

And before you point out how racist I'm being by criticizing two black actors, I'll point something else out:
1. I expect a LOT more from Fishburne because he's an amazing actor.
2. Apparently there are no black people on Krypton. At all.

The majority of the cast was ridiculously solid. Michael Shannon was a great villain, Crowe was very believable as Jor-El, Diane Lane was great, Antje Traue made me completely forget about Sarah Douglas, Amy Adams was great although her role was badly written, and Henry Cavill is the second best Superman ever. (He has the potential to pass Reeve.)

As for the story, it's a mess.

I loved the new origin story, and the way they developed Clark's background was brilliant. Both aspects were the best Superman stuff ever put on screen.

The next three paragraphs are probably the most spoiler filled, so if you want to avoid ANY sort of spoilers, even these mild ones, do so now.

However, once Clark becomes Superman, things take a turn. Logic goes completely out the window. Villains act like villains for no apparent reason, unless you can explain it by saying Kryptonians never learned the phrase/concept "You can catch more flies with sugar than shit". The whole yellow sun/Krypton atmosphere thing. The military acts like Hollywood military. And the government does something that its own policies say they don't do, and they do it without reason. And there's more...

The fight scenes are a whole other thing. They're both awesome, and not. They really let Superman flex his muscle, but they still limit it. The destruction, however, is just wow. Like nothing you've ever seen before, yet oddly barren. (You'll see...)

Oh, and my biggest complaint of the movie, there is no "moment" for Superman. Remember Superman starring Christopher Reeve? Remember the helicopter scene when the world sees him for the first time? That's not in this movie. Remember The Avengers when Captain America saves that guy in Germany or when Iron Man comes in to nail Loki? That's not in this movie. Remember Thor when the hammer comes flying at him after he's been beaten? That's not in this movie. There is no "moment" where the world sees him or where he's there to save the day, and everyone knows "everything changed". It's really sad because that's a major theme of the movie.

Spoiler stuff is over.

If you need the big screen and loud speakers, see it in the theater, but during a matinee when it's cheaper. Otherwise, wait to rent it.

I'd call it 6.5 out of 10. Great acting, great effects, bad writing...

Also, no post credits scene.

I liked it, and I too felt like there was a hole or two in the writing and/or logic.

Yes, there needed to be a 'moment.' Even the terrible last movie had the scene with saving the airplane in the baseball stadium.

But, i dont feel like i wasted my money. Looking forward to a rewatch.

Also, LEXCORP tanker truck. Hello next movie.

Is it the scene where he has a vision of the Fortress of Solitude with, "If you build it, he will come," going on in the background? I may be confusing that with another film.

Saw it. Didn't like it. Details in the spoiler thread.

1) The characters acted more and more retarded as time went on.

2) I want a Superman movie where I don't get the Krypton backstory until the second flick. Fuck that, I want it scattered across three or four movies. God, that shit drags. 2.5 hour movie that should have been 1.5.

3) Kevin Costner's character was a walking bleeding vagina and acted like an idiot in nearly every scene.

4) The pacing/editing ... wtf was up with that? One scene in a military base, the next shot cuts to the great wide open?

5) Kryptonian biology/technology in this movie gets as many random powers as Superman gets in the comics.

I'm sure the regular forum members are simply stunned!

I kind of debate your points there as well, but...

1 - You don't explain this in the spoiler thread.
2 - I simply disagree. Get it out of the way so you don't have to worry about it every film where different writers, directors, etc might be involved.
3 - This is simply a stupid statement. I'll address it in the spoiler thread.
4 - This is an odd criticism. I found that transition to be fine, and explained well.
5 - He gets random powers in the comics? As for the Kryptonian biology, I agree. I thought the technology was way too powerful.

The dude the horse killed managed to make time go backwards. Once he can do that, he can just rewind to the beginning of any of Gene Hackman's schemes and stop him before it occurs.
