I was at a dinner last night and my cousin and I were talking movies, and he said he wasn't looking forward to this movie because he doesn't want to see all these good guys in a war with each other.
I made an offhand comment to him that, upon reflection, I wonder how much deeper it goes... I said, "I think this movie illustrates very well that sometimes good people can have different views of an issue." Some rabid liberal relatives happened to be within earshot, and I hoped they got my meaning, but probably not.
I wonder how much of the politically decisive national mood influenced the decision to make Civil War the next Cap movie, or if it was just an accident.

It's about Tony Stark being a dick. He's always been one.

An abrasive personality isn't enough to make one a "bad" person, IMO.

Civil War is all about Stark Industries doing shit that would make Lex Corp look like the Salvation Army.

Opening weekend expected to be huge.
Civil War is all about Stark Industries doing shit that would make Lex Corp look like the Salvation Army.
No, not really.
If anything else I say is a spoiler for the movie, it's purely coincidental. I'm just talking about the books.
It was about the Super Human Registration Act. Basically, if you had powers, they wanted you to register with the government instead of being a vigilante.
Iron Man was on the side of registration. He figured if people registered the government would keep their secret and could train them to use their powers.
Captain America thought folks revealing their identities would put them and their loved ones in harm's way. He also believed it would turn super humans from heroes into weapons.
You might have your own personal bias (anti-government), but neither was in the wrong. Both arguments have strong pros and strong cons.
Now during the fights to took place between heroes things got ugly. It was revealed that Stark was doing unethical things (same shit Batman does prepping for his allies to go evil...) and not every hero walked away alive. (I won't get into who was responsible for the death(es) as that might become a spoiler, although I am 90% sure they won't go the same path in the movie...at least not on one path...)

No, not really.
He mind-controlled and brainwashed unwilling slaves into being his brownshirts.

Going back to my comment about Tony being a dick.

At least there's precedent. It was introduced in A2 that he was afraid of the big shit he/they were doing, and even earlier in IM3 where he had PTSD from the big shit they did in A1. It's nice that his shit won't come out of nowhere.

Not in this story...
He had people who agreed with him, but nobody was mind-controlled and/or brainwashed.
Going back to my comment about Tony being a dick.
How does agreeing with registering and training those folks to use their powers responsibly make him a dick? I'm seriously asking. I don't get the connection.

In the books it all fits their characters nicely and I hope it will here too.

Are we talking the '06 or '15 version? He nanite'd the shit out of a number of villains in '06.

Isn't the Civil War storyline just a thinly veiled allegory about gun registration and control?

He's a dick because he forgets not everyone's a billionaire with their own personal mansion, air force, navy, power armour, manufacturing plant, etc. Iron Man has a fucking fortress to fall back into if shit goes bad. I always felt Cap could have won the war if he'd just had a crate of scotch shipped to Tony's home...

Ah yes, The Initiative. "A super hero team in every state" and to get enough members, they needed villains. That was post-Civil War and a direct result of it, but this wasn't in Civil War itself.

Yes, and that's very interesting all by itself because comic book writers tend to be liberal and the book didn't have a clear "correct side or viewpoint". In fact, I think you could make a stronger point that it leaned anti-registration, and thus, anti-government regulation.

A great point about most people's point of view whether they're a real person or not. Everyone looks through a prism built by their own experiences and reality.
Back to the movie, I'm getting nervous about it because the reviews are off the charts positive. I'm worried they're hyping it too much and I'm going to be disappointed.

If Marvel put out a movie that bad, they'd all commit ritual seppuku.

I suspect this is going to be as deep or as shallow as you're willing to go with it. That was one of the beautiful things about Winter Soldier in my mind. It came out in the middle of all the NSA stuff, but you didn't have to really think about all that for just a good action flick. I think this one might be similar. Good action flick with deeper philosophical underpinnings if you choose to look at them.

Good movie, but they sure do pretend that the United Nations has all kinds of authority.

Disney/Marvel is just printing money.
Civil War made $181 million this weekend domestically. Adding that to its international total puts it less than $200 million behind BvS's entire run.
Plus, it has really positive reviews.
This train will eventually slow and end, but right now, have we ever seen any studio on a run like this, financially and critically?

That's because in Civil War, the manliest man isn't a woman.
