Honestly, the context of how I acquired that knowledge was filled with many more positives than negatives.
tldr version: This was originally fanfic for Twilight series. My wife was part of that community. There was a lot of erotic fanfic. This story got HUGE in the community, before it got pulled and published. My wife told me about the story as it got more and more popular.

There is a push on FB among certain women about boycotting this movie because it pushes the idea that rape is ok. This movement usages passages from the book that seem to be the guy raping the girl.
I asked my wife about it as she's read the book, and she confirmed that "yeah, he basically rapes her a lot."
She then went on to say that although the woman doesn't want to be raped, by the end of the third book she's effectively tamed the guy and they no longer do the S&M stuff.
So in this "woman's trilogy" the guy is powerful and does his own thing, and by the end he's in a relationship, doesn't get what he wants sexually anymore, and she has all the power.
Fun stuff.

As I have said over and over, the only difference between Mr. Grey and a typical abusive boyfriend is a billion dollars. And apparently she also has Stockholm Syndrome. Rape her til she loves you, which works if you are rich.
