I suppose it explains why he didn't run out in the LotR trilogy. He learned his lesson before.

They should have called this film: "Dwarves are worthless, but Gandolph is there to save them every fucking time."
I think he saved the day 5 times. The dwarves never saved themselves once.

That's about the only way the movie is like the book, then. The whole book is the dwarves getting in trouble and Gandalf---and later Bilbo---saves the day.
