Doctors / Healthcare
Re: Doctors / Healthcare
I do not look forward to such nightmares when I'm retired and off the company plan.

Re: Doctors / Healthcare
I've been told by some people that when you go to the doctor, just tell them you don't have insurance and you'll pay out of pocket. The claim is that you get super cheap pricing and no dealing with paperwork. No idea if that's true.

Re: Doctors / Healthcare
We tried that with our dentist, and it failed.
But yeah, in theory they should give you what they get from insurance, or less, because of the lack of overhead.

We got a discount from our dentist. Not much, but there was one.
You'll need to get on Obamacare. It might be cheaper than cobra. Well, if you are ok with bronze.
Our experience with bronze was. . . Ok. It touted high deductibles, large copay, etc. However, they really went to bat for us. The doc would bill insurance and insurance would say, "we aren't paying this, but also, you will only bill this at 'some ridiculously low amount'. I felt like we were paying about 10% of the billed cost. There were also times where they would say "yes, we will pay this, but you invoiced it incorrectly". They would do this for two years and then say "sorry, the statute of limitations kicked in and no one has to pay this now". They did that a lot when I had that dirt bike accident. 2 days in the hospital, multiple specialists, x-ray, MRI, etc, etc. I think I was about $1200 out of pocket despite the 9k deductible. Every time we got a bill, the insurance company would say "don't pay it" and send them their "you are invoicing it wrong" letter.
On paper, we always felt fucked by Obamacare. But in practice, they took care of us. That being said, pre-covid, we were paying as much as $1200/month for insurance. Post, it was subsidized down to about $400. 2025, the subsidies ended and it went up to $1800. But that's also when I merged and we are on a group plan through work now.
So even though our doctor bills were 'covered', insurance was still expensive (pre-covid). I was happy with $400.

Re: Doctors / Healthcare
We already exhausted our deductible this year, so want to keep the same plan. So we're doing COBRA. Then, I'm lazy, so I can keep it until Dec 2027. So 2028 we'll look at Obamacare stuff.Cakedaddy wrote: Tue Jul 14, 2026 11:36 am You'll need to get on Obamacare. It might be cheaper than cobra. Well, if you are ok with bronze.
I'm expecting $2,500-$3,000/month family of four.
